At the close of the 19th centenary of the death of the holy Apostles, Saints Peter and Paul, the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land desired to revive the memory of the prince of the Apostles in the Holy Places of the Sea of Tiberias by promoting archaeological excavations at Tabgha around the rock of the conferring of the primacy and at Capharnaum at the traditional site of his house. The archaeological excavation of Tabgha was directed and illustrated by Father Stanislaus Loffreda ofm of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum of the Flagellation, Jerusalem. Of the excavation at Capharnaum, which we ourselves directed, we give here a brief preliminary report.
